What to expect during a diabetic eye exam
Diabetic eye exams go beyond a standard vision test. Our doctors perform a thorough evaluation that may include:
- Retinal imaging and dilation to examine the blood vessels in the back of your eye
- Optical coherence tomography (OCT) to detect swelling or fluid leakage in the retina
- Intraocular pressure testing to monitor glaucoma risk
- A detailed review of your medical and diabetes history
- Coordination of care with your primary physician or endocrinologist, if needed
We recommend diabetic eye exams at least once a year – more often if your condition is unstable or vision changes occur.
Early detection makes a difference
Diabetic eye disease often develops without pain or obvious symptoms in the early stages. That’s why early detection is essential. The sooner we identify subtle changes in your retina or blood vessels, the better your chances of preserving vision and preventing long-term complications.
Even if your blood sugar is well-controlled, regular exams allow us to track changes over time and make informed decisions about your care.
