How we diagnose keratoconus
We use advanced corneal topography and pachymetry to map the shape and thickness of your cornea. These tools allow us to detect even early-stage keratoconus, monitor progression, and determine the best vision correction strategy for each patient.
Specialty contact lenses for keratoconus
Standard glasses or soft contact lenses may not provide clear vision for patients with keratoconus due to the irregular corneal surface. Our doctors specialize in fitting advanced lenses designed to restore clarity and comfort, including:
Scleral lenses
Large-diameter gas permeable lenses that vault over the entire cornea and rest on the white part of the eye (sclera), providing stable, crisp vision and long-lasting moisture.
Hybrid lenses
Combining a rigid center with a soft skirt, hybrid lenses offer the visual sharpness of gas permeable lenses with the comfort of soft lenses – ideal for patients with mild to moderate keratoconus.
Custom soft lenses
For patients with early-stage keratoconus or mild irregularity, specially designed soft lenses can be an effective and comfortable option.
RGP lenses (Rigid Gas Permeable)
Traditional hard lenses that provide excellent visual clarity by creating a smooth refractive surface over the misshaped cornea.
Our optometrists take precise measurements to ensure an optimal lens fit, and we offer ongoing care to adjust lenses as your condition or vision needs change.
Co-management for corneal cross-linking and surgery
While many patients can be managed with specialty lenses alone, we also work closely with corneal specialists in Metro Detroit when advanced care is needed. This includes co-managing treatments such as:
- Corneal cross-linking (CXL) to strengthen the corneal structure and slow disease progression
- Intacs or corneal ring implants to reshape the cornea in moderate cases
- Corneal transplant referrals for severe or advanced keratoconus
Our role is to guide your diagnosis, refer you when appropriate, and provide long-term follow-up care to protect your vision.
